Here are some more facts that have surprised me or interested me during my time in Chile:
- Why in the world does America not use the metric system?? Many other countries do, including Chile. It is difficult for me to hear things measured in kilometers or grams because I have to convert them to standards that I use in the US for them to have any meaning for me. It is the same with time and temperature, for they use Military time and Celsius here. I think that this is one thing that helps isolate Americans and keeps us from learning other cultures easily.
- Fleas are very easily picked up here. With all of the dogs and cats that roam the streets freely, one can simply pick up fleas by brushing by them on the street or riding the public transportation system. As someone who did not grow up near this environment, I do not have the antibody in my system that easily protects from flea bites. Itchy!
- Milk comes in boxes and more often than not is not refrigerated at the time of purchase. It has a very short shelf life, so the containers are rather small.
- The wildlife is different! Almost everyday I can see pelicans, seagulls, other diving birds, ducks, all breeds of dogs, cats, and sea lions aka wolves of the sea in spanish (how cool!).
