Lollapalooza

This last weekend I travelled to Santiago, Chile, to see a two day outdoor music festival called Lollapalooza. There are versions of Lollapalooza in Chicago, US, and São Paulo, Brazil. I went with a few friends from my study abroad program and some new friends from Santiago. Although I spent more money than an average weekend deserves, it was worth it.

The event lasted all Saturday and all Sunday in 90° heat. Some 60,000 people attended on Saturday, and some 80,000 on Sunday. The groups that I was able to see were Bassnectar, Skrillex, Foo Fighters, MGMT, Pretty Lights, Calvin Harris, Foster the People, and Arctic Monkeys. Unfortunately I was not able to see all of the groups that played, but alas I turn to the internet to educate myself. I am really excited to listen to the Chilean music that I missed, like Los Jaivas and Camila Moreno. My favorite was definitely Skrillex. The ambiance of the stadium packed with people, the hushed excitement and lights in the dark before the show, and the roar of the crowd when he came on to play were ecstatic. I almost had the chance to hear Skrillex's characteristic heavy dubstep music in Colorado, but I am subtly glad that I missed it because I have a hard time imagining that it could be better than this show. I loved being among the people around me who were dancing, dancing, dancing. We were in the first row of a tier in the stadium too, so we could see the entire stadium floor jump and go crazy when Skrillex dropped the bass. It was so extravagantly exciting.

This is my friend LeeAnn and I while we were waiting during the noon heat in a crowd of people for Foster the People. Being very tall gringas, we secretly reveled in the fact that we were taller than most of the crowd. Needless to say, we had no problem seeing the show :)
